MARISSA

Marissa's SafePlace Empty Lover Saved by J.R. Ward 1 Apr 08

Lover Saved by J.R. Ward 1 Apr 08

Dear Ms. Ward,

I admit, you succeeded in fooling us in Lover Revealed. You brought together Butch and Marissa at last, tying up a romantic arc that started with the very first Black Dagger Brotherhood novel, Dark Lover. However, most of us couldn't help but notice the brotherly love between Vishous and Butch. I mean, Vishous actually feels envious of Marissa. And then you give Vishous his own love story, and you know how satisfying THAT was. I think the fangirl screams of rage could be heard across continents when people found out what you did to the heroine in yet another effort to resolve the tensions that exist because of the mortal-vampire inequalities in terms of power and lifespan.

But with Lover Saved, it seems almost as if you realized what people have seen from day one, and you've consummated the glorious bromance between Butch and Vishous. Well done. It was a brave move, and I applaud you. The first love scene literally had me in tears. But maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

The book starts with Marissa and Jane perishing in a tragic assassination plot stemming from the Omega; the Omega figures that killing the women will completely incapacitate two of the best warriors in the Brotherhood. And he's right. The deaths rock the Brotherhood's foundation to the core. But what the Omega doesn't plan on is the fact that Vishous and Butch, united by their grief, set out to avenge the deaths of their loved ones with a single-minded fury (and with Phury). And what the Omega definitely didn't plan on was how Vishous and Butch, finally free to pursue their own love, find comfort in each other, and eventually each other's arms.

As one of the first gay romances written by a mainstream romance author, I have to commend your vision and your bravery. The sex scenes are incredibly hot, and while a few women do eventually make their way into the book, it's crystal-clear that they're merely conduits for the love and desire Vishous and Butch feel for each other--the vampires need to feed on the blood of the members of their own opposite sex to survive, and in this case, love transcends blood quite clearly. However, I still feel some reservations about this book and the way the characters and world continue to evolve.

For example, I have to say that I didn't especially enjoy the way the central suspense plot was resolved. God was quite literally in the machine, as were...vampire elephants. I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil the book, but honestly: vampire elephants?

Also, speaking of vampire animals: is the new vampire dog, Phido, really necessary? We know that owning pets can be a heartbreaking enterprise for humans, since our lifespans are typically much longer than the average dog's, or cat's. But to resolve this for vampires by inserting a new race of dogs is a bit much, no? And honestly, having the dog represent the pinnacle of all doghood and giving it an underclass of beta vampire dogs to boss around as part of the pack extends some of the class and racial tensions inherent in your books to an uncomfortable degree.

Additionally, the Scribe Virgin is getting creepier and creepier. Are you sure she's on the side of the good guys?

All in all, a flawed but commendable attempt.

Sincerely,

Jarah

Marissa's SafePlace Empty Janissa by Midgetbee 21/08/2012

'You're what?'

Marissa sighed. 'A lesbian, Butch. I like females now.'

'Was it me?' asked Butch, his brows drawing together in a frown. 'Did I not do enough for you, Marissa? Baby, I've tried, I really have but I do need to sleep sometimes--'

'It's not about sex, Butch.'

'It's not?'

'No.'

'Oh. So what is it about?' he asked slowly. 'Because its kind of ruining the fantasy for me over here.'

'I don't have to explain myself to you, Butch,' said Marissa impatiently. 'Jane just gives me things you haven't.'

'Like a car?'

'No! Like--' Marissa paused for a moment, a faraway look in her eye. 'A female will come into Safe Place, and she'll need help. Medical help. Jane lets me in the room when the female is examined.'

'So it's like a medical fetish?' Butch whistled through his teeth. 'Well, I don't know anything about that, but let me ask V, I'm sure he's got some DVDs I can borrow.'

'It's not the medicine. The female is examined and I'm there, yes?'

'Yeah.'

'So I stand there, looking concerned, but resolute,' explained Marissa. 'I take the female's hand. I smile bravely, the female thanks me--'

'And then lesbian sex?'

'No, then it becomes all about me and how brave and wonderful I am for saving all the females.'

'I thought Jane was saving them--'

'I provide Jane.' Marissa smiled. 'Me, me, me. The centre of attention. Just as it should be.'

'So what does Jane get from all this?'

'It's not about Jane.'

'It's about you.'

'Yes.' Marissa finally snapped out of her reverie and noticed his expression. 'Oh, don't look at me like that, Butch. It was inevitable. What exactly did you two think we were doing when you were off hugging each other in alleyways?'

'Healing not hugging--'

'Not important.' She checked her watch. 'Anyway I have to go. We have a new arrival in an hour and I'll need to be ready. Goodbye, Butch. I'll call you when I want something.'

Butch sat on the bed in shock as the door closed behind her. Distantly he heard V's door shut a minute later, then his best friend walked in.

'Cop? How you doing?' said Vishous softly.

'Marissa's a lesbian,' said Butch numbly.

'I heard.'

'And Jane?'

'Yep.'

'I need a drink.' He finally looked up. 'Hey, V, why're you naked...? And what you grinning about...?'

Marissa's SafePlace Empty Change that moment by Kayos 22/08/2012

Message par CopGirl Dim 16 Sep - 22:43

Dark lover. Page 318. (L'amant ténébreux tome 1)

“Zsadist, leave him alone.” The guy with the great hair had stuck his head out into the room. “Wrath wants the human alive. For the time being.”
The scarred man had spared Butch one last look. “Try it. Just try it. I’d rather hunt you down then eat dinner with them.”
Then he’d sauntered out.
Threat not withstanding, Butch had cased what he could see of the house. There wasn’t a phone he could find, and judging by the security system panel he’d spied in the front hall, all the windows and doors in the place had to be wired for sound. Busting out discreetly wasn’t an option.
And he didn’t want to leave Beth behind.
Butch inhaled. Frowned.
The tropics. He smelled the ocean.
He turned around.
A breathtaking woman was in the doorway. Waif-like, elegant, she was dressed in a filmy gown, and her gorgeous blond hair drifted to her hips in waves. Her face was all delicate perfection, her eyes the pail blue colour of sea glass.
She took a step back as their eyes met, her hand coming up to her throat and she gasped in fright; took a step back into the foyer and disappeared.
“Shit!” he staggered back until his knees hit one of the fancy couches and he fell on his ass.
Poof gone. Just like that. Butch could hear a herd of heavy foot falls coming his way but he was still blinking like he’d been staring at a light bulb for to long.
She disappeared. No, like literally disappeared. Poof, gone.
But he could still smell the ocean.
She had been there.
He wasn’t loosing it.
The door crashed open and all of the guys from earlier came piling into the, room knives drawn and looks that promised pain.
The one that looked like a moviestar stuck his nose in the air and sniffed, those bright blue peepers of his never leaving Butch, whose ass was still planted on the couch.
“Where is she, human?”
Butch wondered if his face showed how bewildered he felt.
“Poof, gone. She just... disappeared.”

Vishous stared at the human with some amusement as the man tried to sort his ass from his elbow. Marissa had obviously dematerialized in front of him—

A barrage of images side swiped him, straight out of the left field and almost put him on his ass. An epic migraine pounded through his skull as his Occipital lobe worked over time to process images that he was receiving, but not seeing. His dagger fell from his hand as he clutched his head and he was vaguely aware that every one was looking at him as he tried to keep himself vertical.
The human smiling at him—The human laughing with him in a room he didn’t recognize—The human stabbing a lesser though the hart, a victory grin on his face—The human bleeding on a metal table—The human shouting at him as V shivered in his arms—A pair of fangs being driven into the flesh of V's throat—His name on a pair of broad shoulders—The not so human spread out on black satin sheets, a sensuous grin on his face as Vishous approached him slowly—

On and on the vision went, one of the longest in his life. As it tapered off he had the weird feeling that the world had just been put to rights, like everything had settled in to its right place and would never be moved again.
Set in stone.

Vishous looked up, the cop was staring straight at him, one eyebrow raised and still looking bewildered.

V didn’t feel much like killing the human now.
